My mom has a relatively new Dell desktop. It runs MS Windows XP. Whatever the hell XP stands for is another matter.
She only had dialup for most of the time, recently she got DSL. Apparently in her term among the dialup types her computer tried to automatically update to Service Pack 2. Something happened, and it never installed.
Though it said that SP2 installed, when she tried to update another program it said you needed SP2. She tried to go to windows update, but it said I already have it. SHe tried to delete it, but it said I didn't have it.
Well, that was about a month ago. She literally spent about 25 hours with the phone to her ear talking to nice young Canadians and Indians about the problem, and despite being a part of the Dell "Award Winning Technical Assistance" they were of no help.
Here comes me. Mr Macintosh. I've never even used XP before, and within 2 hours, the problem was fixed, and her computer was totally up to date.
What I did is since the Windows Update cannot easily be circumvented, I simply circumvented it. I figured that the installation was stalled because of a bad download. I went to a mirror and downloaded the standalone SP2 update. I downloaded it, installed it, and everything now runs fine.
Why do peole even call tech support? Who cares if they are outsourced. They suck and are stupid, and who needs them.
