Well across chat rooms and in back rooms many day to day Republicans are in a panic over the debate last night. They say that the slick talking and master debater, John Kerry, won the debate. |
In many ways he won. Acccoring to style you learn in High School debate he won. He used conjecture and nitpicks to try to get the President off his game. This was especially true during the second half of the debate. If you would give a score, I'd say that Bush won the first half, Kerry won the second. Closing remarks go to Bush.
That is good because the over polite atmosphere was boring and only those die hards like me and Brit Hume over at Fox watched the whole thing. The average family undecided voter watched most likely watched about 60 minutes of it, and then got the kids ready for bed, and finished the stuff that regular American folks do.
The trouble with Kerry was he routinely failed to answer specific questions. Time and time again the moderator asked "for specifics", and kerry would change the subject into an attack on George Bush. That is a typical ploy for someone who is trying to play both sides of the fence.
Kerry's main trouble is that no matter what he says, he is going to anger half his base. So by avoiding questions, and by attacking Bush he solidifies his base, but he fails ultimately to win support of the undecided voter. In some ways actually, he may have turned some off.
