So That's What's Wrong with the Youngins

From a Reuters story

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - To a young generation of Americans, Jon Stewart may as well be Walter Cronkite.

A new study has confirmed recent surveys that suggest an increasing number of young adults are using late-night comedy and talk shows as their primary vehicle for getting their news, particularly about politics and the 2004 election.

Those same people are turning away from traditional media outlets, such as newspapers and broadcast network evening newscasts in favor of the Internet and cable news networks, according to the Pew Research Center report, which queried 1,506 adults between Dec. 19 and Jan. 4.

No wonder there are people out there who think Bush is a Nazi or that the tax cuts are 'for the rich' or other catchphrases. These people, I hear them a lot, they spout a lot of nonsense, rhetoric really, and this explains where some of their ideas come from. Here are some excerpts from late night monologues:

Kilborn

Former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill says that President Bush was often disengaged and was easily distracted. In response to the statements President Bush today said, "Fruit Rollups rule!”

Leno
I’m not sure if Bush understands the intricacies of space travel. Yesterday he asked President Fox if Mexico has a moon, too.

I understand that these are just jokes, and they are harmless, but when you don't understand the context and if this is the only place for young people to get their news, that is disturbing.

Also disturbing are the softball interviews given to most guests. Liberal and Conservative alike. Guests are free to promote their agenda and influence young misinformed minds with diatribe and lies.

The fact remains, though, that there are traditionally more liberal leaning guests on these talk shows leads which leads to more liberal points of view being discussed.

The point is that a lot of people out there who spout opinions don't read newspapers or don't watch regular news. They get their news from comics or left or right wing only web-sites. They don't make their own ideas or know what a real thought is. They mistake passion or a lot of talk for true ideas.
These people are indeed the uninformed electorate.
